Soil to Loom: Blacksheep Blanket Scarves

Soil to Loom: Blacksheep Blanket Scarves

A short film tracing the making of the  Blacksheep Farm Felted Blanket Scarves — from soil to loom within a two-hour range in rural Ontario.

Starting with naturally grey and black sheep’s wool sourced from Blacksheep Farm in Chesley, the fibre is washed, carded, spun, woven, felted, and hand-finished — all under one roof, just a two-hour drive from the farm, at Wave Fibre Mill.

At a time when many wool processing facilities have shuttered due to consolidation or lack of succession, Wave’s new mill stands as a bright exception — bringing new energy, skill, and presence to the movement toward regional fibre systems.

Working with Blacksheep Farm’s full 2025 clip invited the unique challenge of using the entire range of natural wool colours. The broad check pattern in two colour-ways was chosen to highlight these variations — integrating the farm’s light and dark wools in whatever proportions the year’s clip provided.

It was truly special to work together with mill founder Wave Weir and farmer Brenda Hsueh in bringing this scarf project to life.
